How Swim Meets Work

Swim meets are a great opportunity to showcase the skills you have been working on as well as build relationships with your teammates!

                                                                                                           BEFORE THE MEET
  • Swimmers will be given an arrival time that is generally about 20 minutes prior to the start of warm-ups.
  • If you are not at the pool 25 minutes before the start of warm up coaches will scratch you from your events that session (unless you have made prior arrangements with your coach). Swim Saskatchewan requires that all scratches are submitted 30 minutes prior to the start of the session.
  • When you arrive at the pool swimmers will all sit together. Typically parents can watch from the opposite side of the pool! We will look after your swimmer and the only way to ensure they are on time for their event is if they are sitting with their team!
  • Warm-up time is for swimmers and coaches only. Parents shoudl drop off their athlete and find a spot to sit in the spectator section.

                                                                                                           DURING THE MEET

  • After warm-ups are complete your swimmer will go back to the area where the team is sitting. This is a good chance for them to get to know their teammates and prepare for their race. Please ensure your swimmer has appropriate snacks and water prior to dropping them off.
  • Your child will check in with the coach before and after the race. This is a great opportunity to remind them of technique and break down their race. After their swim is complete the coach may allow them to go check in with their parents (time permitting).
  • All questions regarding meet reseults, an officiating call, disqualificiations or conduct of a meet shoudl be referred to a coach and he/she will pursue the matter through the appropriate channels. Parents should not approach officials at any time.

Types of Swim Meets

  MINI MEETS

  • YSSC holds mini meets throughout the year. This is an opporunity for all swimmers (competitive and non-competitive) to compete in a low stress environment. There will be a variety of events to ensure all swimmers experience success! It is also a chance to practice skills for an upcoming swim meet.

  DEVELOPMENTS MEETS

  • Developmental meets are designed for young/new swimmers to gain experience in competition and to compete for "best times". In swimming swimmers are racing against the clock and are trying to better their previous time for that event. Swimmers are placed in heats with athletes with similar times and experience. Swimmers may try to earn "A" times to qualify them for the next level of competition.

   INVITATIONAL MEETS

  • Invitational meets are for swimmers who have some experience at competitions. Typcially these meets will have a qualification standard of either "A" or "AA" times. Swimmers must have achieved this qualification standard at a previous meet to be eligible to attend.

JUNIOR "A" PROVINCIALS & MAN/SASK CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • When swimmers have achieved at least one "A" time they are eligible to compete at Junior "A" Provincials. Swimmers will also be allowed bonus swims once they have achieved one "A" time so they are eligible to swim more than one race at the competition. Junior Provincials is held in March in MooseJaw.  Once a swimmer has achieved a "AA" time in a particular event they are no longer eligible to swim that event at Junior Provincials.
  • Man/Sask Championships are a showcase of Manitoba and Saskatchewan's best swimmers. To meet eligibility criteria you must have achieved at least one "AA" time in your age group. Man/Sask Championships are held twice a year. The first competition is in a short course pool in March and the second is long course in July. Man/Sask rotates between Winnipeg, Regina and Saskatoon.
